The first edition at the Institut français du Cambodge of this mini-festival dedicated to Southeast Asian cinema demonstrated how its most
remarkable films reflect the societies, cultures, and aspirations of a rich and complex region. It also acknowledged the emergence of
talents whose audacity and creativity challenge traditional lines of representation.
The films selected this year once again offer a diversity of perspectives and approaches—both narrative and aesthetic—that transcend the
usual clichés. From the Durassian drift under the Laotian sun in Goodbye Mister Wong by Kiyé Simon Luang—whom
we'll have the pleasure of welcoming in person—to the "auteur horror film" Tenement by Cambodians Sokyou Chea and
Inrasothythep Neth, to the social realism in post-coup Myanmar with MA - Cry of Silence by Maw Naing. Other works
play with genres, blending comedy, magical realism, and body horror in Don't Cry, Butterfly by Vietnamese
filmmaker Duong Dieu Linh, or mixing social drama with police thriller in Abang Adik by Malaysian Jin Ong.
The program also presents the latest works from celebrated filmmakers of the region: the paranoid thriller Stranger Eyes
by Singaporean Chris Yeo, who already won the Golden Leopard at Locarno in 2018 for his first film A Land Imagined, and our
closing film, the Indonesian historical epic This City Is a Battlefield by Mouly Surya, who made a strong
impression at Cannes in 2017 with Marlina, the Murderer in Four Acts.
For the opening film, we're delighted to welcome prolific filmmaker Antoinette Jadaone with Sunshine. A sports
drama and coming-of-age story, her film is above all an unflinching portrait of Filipino youth confronting conservatism in its many forms.
The fact that Sunshine, This City Is a Battlefield, and Tenement were entirely or partially made in
Cambodia—with Kongchak Studio teams providing sound design and mixing for the first two films, and producing the last—is an added pleasure
that will allow us to celebrate sound during the panel discussion bringing together the filmmakers in attendance and sound designer
Vincent Villa.
During these few days, we invite you to dive with us into this young and multifaceted Southeast Asian cinema, whose works vibrate with an
energy that sketches the contours of an identity in motion and shapes the narratives of tomorrow.
