Iran, de nos jours. Un mécanicien sans histoire est confronté au souvenir de son séjour dans une prison iranienne lorsqu'il rencontre un homme qu'il soupçonne d'avoir été son geôlier. Paniqué, il rassemble quelques anciens compagnons de cellule pour confirmer son identité.

À travers un cinéma minimaliste et pourtant profondément politique, Jafar Panahi, qui utilise souvent un style semi-documentaire brouillant les frontières entre fiction et réalité, ne cesse d'interroger la fragilité des libertés individuelles et la complexité des liens sociaux dans une société régie par la censure et l'indicible. Via l'intrigue simple de ce film, le réalisateur dépeint le peuple iranien luttant pour sa liberté et filme, au grand jour, la force de la rébellion des hommes et des femmes dans une société oppressive.

Iran, present day. An unassuming mechanic is reminded of his time in an Iranian prison when he encounters a man he suspects to be his sadistic jailhouse captor. Panicked, he rounds up a few of his fellow ex-prisoners to confirm the man's identity. 

Through his cinema, which is minimalist yet deeply political, Jafar Panahi, who often uses a semi-documentary style cinema that blurs the lines between fiction and reality, never stops questioning the fragility of individual freedoms and the complexity of social connections in a society that is governed by censorship and the unspoken. In this film’s simple plot, which could be summarized as “after a small mishap, events ensue,” the director portrays the Iranian people struggling for their freedom and filming, in plain sight, the strength of men and women’s rebellion in a constrained society.
